Shut Up or Put Out

As a general rule, I do not discuss politics or religion with people. I find that these two topics are actually divisive because people are passionate about their politics and their gods.

This is not going to be a political piece. There are already so many who are more qualified to discuss all the facets and loopholes in politics. I will not say anything that had not been said before.

Last Monday, we, as a company, have taken advantage of an opportunity that ABS-CBN gave us. It entailed us providing some breakfast for the Cebu crew. But that isn’t what I want to talk about. It’s actually what that event reminded me.

The ABS-CBN event is the launch of their campaign to guard the ballots for the elections that will happen exactly 365 days from today. That reminded me once again that in one year, we would be voting a new leadership for this country. That’s scary for me.

Nope, I’m not scared because I don’t know whom to vote. It’s because there isn’t anyone that I would vote.

I’m so turned off by the many politicians w.ho had been doing so much self-promotion exaggeratingly far from the campaign period. The others who had been open about their plans do not say anything that seem to be devoid of any self-service or the usual platitudes.

In the past elections, somehow, I had some slight preferences, emphasis on slight. But this time, there really isn’t anyone. Years back, I thought Mar Roxas would be a good choice. But since then, I have changed my mind. He had done things that I either cannot respect or believe in. As for the rest, none of them deserve a drop of ink from my voting pen.

And don’t get me started on a certain city mayor who has presidential ambition but is such a coward to hide behind “requests by his constituents”. Yeah, yeah! Some would say it’s a strategy. To me it’s plain cowardice and duplicity, both of which he has in spades.

May 11, 2010 is still a long way away. It may be very negative to say this, but I thoroughly doubt there will be any major changes in our political scenario. As long as there are people who sell their votes, as long as there are people easily dazzled by celebrity, as long as there are people willing to kill for the office, as long as corruption is seeping through our pores, we will never have see any real changes. It will still be the same rotten system run by the same rotten people and/or their relatives.

So, if you’re one of those people who constantly complains but never really does anything, I only have one message for you: SHUT UP OR PUT OUT.

i guess i'm quite blessed to be spared from all the pre-campaign propaganda going on (all my manila-based relatives are complaining about them).

politics in the philippines is really a sad matter. most of my foreign acquaintances here (oh wait, i'm the foreigner here, hahaha) tell me sayang daw ang pilipinas. like indonesia, they said we are rich in natural resources and we have some of the most talented people in the world...however, greed and power struggles win and the filipino nation is at the losing end.

we should indeed shape up. look at vietnam. a few decades ago, they were so far behind us. look what HCM city is now. i shudder to think if cambodia or even bangladesh overtakes us!

"kanser ng lipunan" - rizal was a genius.

@iluzionada - i am glad for you too. Yesterday, as you know, is independence day here. I am very sad to report that a lot of people view the day's significance as nothing more than another 3-day weekend.

And i must admit, there are actually times i have to ask myself if i'm still proud to be pinoy.

Yes we are a talented bunch, we have so many things going for us, but we are the cause of our continuous downfall. We elect people who give us money, we have become too selfish, and we refuse to admit that we are part of the reason wny things do not get better.

We become indignant when other people disparage us but we do not try to look beyond what was said. We refuse to see where it came from.
