The Long Road Ahead

i look down
at the path i'm on
i look up
and see the endless road ahead
i took a step
and then another, then another
till i can take a step
without thinking
sometimes i would see
a left turn or a right turn
to a place i want to go to
or a waiting friend
i would stop for a moment
do i go straight
or do i turn
almost invariably
i go straight
i can visit another time
after i have
reached the end
of the path
till i have walked
as long as forever
and now
i look down
at the path i'm on
i look up
and see the endless road ahead
i ask, when
